The bit depth of a file determines the dynamic range of the audio. See Understanding bit depth. You can raise the bit depth of a file to gain a greater dynamic range, or you can lower the bit depth to reduce the file size. Enables or disables dithering when converting to lower bit depths. If dithering is disabled, bit depth is abruptly truncated, producing a crackly effect on low-volume passages caused by quantization distortion.

Although dithering introduces a small amount of noise, the result is far preferable to the increased distortion that you would otherwise hear at low signal levels. Dithering also lets you hear sounds that would be masked by the noise and distortion limits of audio at lower bit depths.

Controls how dithering noise is distributed relative to the original amplitude value. For additional control, set Noise Shaping options. Noise Shaping. Determines which frequencies contain dithering noise. By introducing noise shaping, you may be able to use lower dither depths without introducing audible artifacts.

The best shaping depends on the source audio, final sample rate, and bit depth. Light is flat up to 14 kHz, ramps noise up to a maximum at 17kHz, and is again flat at higher frequencies. Background noise sounds the same as it does without noise shaping but is about 11dB quieter.

When you clock externally and then you change the sample rate, the Windows driver doesn’t know that you changed the sample rate, since the Windows driver thinks it is in control of the sample rate when it really isn’t.

That program will always report what it thinks the sample rate of the Hilo is set to, and when you change the sample rate out from underneath it, it has no clue that the sample rate of the external device changed. I’ve spent countless hours trying to figure out what was wrong when all the while, you probably knew. I hope you’ll accept this as constructive criticism but I think this is a serious design flaw in the Hilo and I also think it’s very remiss not to give any warning of it in the product manual. You say you don’t recommend using external clocking with the LT-USB fitted but the LT-USB isn’t an optional add-on – it’s an integral part of the unit, and the whole of the product manual, including a very extensive section on external clocking and syncing, is written on the assumption that it’s fitted.

Much is said in the manual about the marvels of the Hilo’s external clocking but nowhere is there even a hint of the problems that users are likely to run into if they use it. In my opinion this incompatibility issue is a serious shortcoming in the Hilo and needs to be fixed, soon. Sure, it’s possible to avoid this by muddling through in the way you suggest, but the manual doesn’t tell you this and the whole point of paying a premium price for a premium product is that you shouldn’t have to.

OK, rant over and I’ll get back to devising my own workaround for this defect. I do hope you will either fix this flaw very quickly or at the very least, put a warning in the manual. Meanwhile I’m going to put an array of music files on my desktop, one for each sample rate, and I’ll play a few seconds of the right one before recording through the Digital In so as to kick the Hilo into the correct sample rate.

It’s easier than having to delve into the Windows control panel every time. But I can’t believe I’m having to do this. Actually the limitation is USB. USB simply cannot deal with multiple clock domains very well. I would also like to be perfectly clear here, you seem to be blaming Lynx for a sample rate issue with Adobe Audition’s ASIO implementation. Every other application will set the sample rate of the ASIO driver to the project rate.

If that occurred with Audition, then you would not be having any issues. With another application, you would set the sample rate with the application to match the external rate of the digital device, and everything would work as you expect. So the thread title was right after all! Except the fault lies with Audition, not the Hilo. In a normal DAW, the ASIO driver would get its sample rate from the project which in my case would be the same as the source , so there should be no problem.

But in Audition, the driver receives no instructions from the project, and therefore carries on sampling at whatever rate it had been using previously, which may often turn out to be wrong. I restore defaults on the Hilo, then kick it into 96 kHz by playing some 96 kHz music through it. As the fact displayed in the headline above may have given away I compared the sample values of two wave files indeed sections of them and had to find out that both programmes produce different output.
