Circle, or round, profile photos are all the rage these days. You can see them practically everywhere — from Facebook to Spotify to Twitter and Pinterest. What is it about circle profile photos? In a space filled with squares and rectangles, circles most definitely stand out.

With squares, you have your eyes drawn to the corners. Circles draw your eyes to the center, to its content. Moreover, rounded edges are easier on the eyes and convey a message of safety, as opposed to the sharp corners of the square which trick the mind to thinking it is harmful. I looked for a more wallet-friendly alternative and found Pixelmator. Needless to say, it has satisfied all of my image editing needs for my blog. In my example, I chose a photo of a girl with autumn leaves. This photo will be the Background Layer.

You can see in the photo below that it is on the lower left side of the screen. Clicking on the heart shape in the tool menu will bring up more shapes from where you can choose the circle. STEP 3 — Create a circle on top of the photo that you will be cropping.

Position it over the part that you would like to appear on the cropped photo. STEP 4 — As you can see, there are parts of the photo Background Layer that are outside the circle and will no longer be part of the final cropped picture. You have to crop this out. The Crop Tool is also in the Tools section of Pixelmator , just on the left side of the screen. You can see in the photo below that it has been selected. There will still be corners left that are not covered by the circle because the photo is square.

Not to worry about that. Just make sure to crop out as much of the photo as possible. Do this by selecting the Background Layer on the Layer tool bar on the top right side of the screen and then dragging it to the top so that it switches places with the shape layer.

You will notice it on the photo below that the Background Layer is now on the top followed by the shape layer.

This will now crop your photo into a circle. This is the final result of the cropping. You can now export this as a PNG and use it for your blog or other projects.
